Rheinmetall to supply the Spanish army with over 100.000 mortar rounds

Rheinmetall announced that it has received an order from the Spanish government “in the higher double-digit million euro range” for the supply of 104.000 mortar rounds in 60mm, 81mm and 120mm calibers by the end of 2025.

In the press release announcing the order, Rheinmetall stated that “the framework agreement concluded in the first quarter of 2024 is the second of its kind and includes an extension option for two additional years.”

Mortar rounds will be used by the Spanish Army’s infantry “in high explosive, smoke and illumination ammunition variants” that vary in range “between 2.59 km (60mm) and 8.25 km (120mm)” depending on the caliber and system used.

Emphasizing Rheinmetall’s “leading role as a systems supplier in the field of steep-fire systems” the statement mentioned the previous order the company received from Spain for the supply of “155mm artillery ammunition worth over €200 million.”

In the aftermath of the war in Ukraine, Rheinmetall increased its ammunition production. In 2023, the company has acquired the Spanish ammunition maker Expal Systems and created a joint-venture with the Ukrainian Defense Industry JSC.
