Thales aims help navies against smaller targets with NS50 radar

Thales aims to market its new radar system in Asia after acquiring 3 European countries as customers.

Kevin Strangmann, Sales Manager Asia at Thales told DefenseHere they already sold NS50 to Netherlands and Belgium and signed a contract with Polish defense procurement agency to supply the Polish navy.

NS50, Strangmann stated in an interview, operates on X-band frequency and has an instrumented range of 180 kilometers.

Strangmann said: “I think that what is most important for you to know is that the key feature of our surveillance radar is that it can find even the smallest targets in heavy climate two scenarios. And the reason being is that when you bring something to the market, that looks at the real threats that we face today, any Navy faces today; the threat of UAVs, USVs. And the surveillance radar that is able to bring the capability to that Navy to detect those targets and therefore also deal with the threat of course, the entire market is going to jump up in enthusiasm.”

In addition to their contracts with three countries in Europe, Thales aims Asian markets:
“We already see that the Royal Thai Navy is very excited to two witness this sensor in operation as well. The only thing that I believe is most important is that when you look at this from the full combat system point of view, just looking at a radar is not enough.
You need to look at the whole system. And the radar, of course, will bring the maximum capability in order to deal with those threats. And because we have this technology that can detect these smaller targets, we can adequately bring the track information from the surveillance radar to any fighter control alone to deal with the threats and even quicker and better with.”

Thales has supplied both the Royal Thai Army and the Navy sinificantly in recent years. Eight percent of the Royal Thai Navy's fleet is equipped with Thales technology while the Royal Thai Army uses radar and air defense systems produced by Thales.
