German consortium secures 2nd national supplementary study deal for MAWS

German consortium, MAWS GbR, comprising HENSOLDT, ESG Group, and Diehl Defence, has successfully secured the contract for the second national supplementary study for the Franco-German Maritime Airborne Warfare System (MAWS), announced HENSOLDT in a press release on Monday.

Describing the achievement as a significant milestone, the company took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share the news.

MAWS is a sophisticated system integrating various components for maritime reconnaissance, submarine detection, and engaging maritime targets. It leverages both manned and unmanned platforms, along with ground stations. Critical to its functionality are networking data links and an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered cloud solution for sensor data analysis.

The study aims to provide tailored solution recommendations for German naval aviators as part of phase II analysis in the CPM process of the BMVg, in conjunction with the interim Boeing P-8A Poseidon solution, the press release said.

Proposed solutions focus on advancing MAWS through the utilization of both manned and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as carrier platforms, as well as enhancing ground stations. Emphasis is also placed on networking and processing data from diverse assets and ground stations. To facilitate this, the development of a "Maritime Warfare Cloud" is proposed to ensure information autonomy and data sovereignty.

A key aspect of this initiative is achieving information sovereignty through specialized software for data acquisition and analysis utilizing artificial intelligence. As sensor data is processed in the cloud and disseminated across the system network, it will play a pivotal role in the MAWS project. This technology excels not only in data storage but also in recognizing vast volumes of data.

With these advancements, the MAWS collaboration project aims to equip the German Navy with the capabilities needed to effectively address anticipated security policy challenges.
